Hawthorne Backstretch Update, Friday, October 26 –2:00 PM
First of all, I would like the thank everyone who attended the meeting
this morning. We want to keep everyone as informed as possible and
will continue to do so. There were a lot of questions asked and we have
a lot of resources that people can ask those questions to.
To clarify a couple of concerns that arose this morning. The first concern
was in regards to a horse that had a fever on Thursday, October 25 in
Barn C. That horse, under advisement from our veterinarians has been
transferred to the location in barn K2 to be monitored. As of this morning,
that horse no longer had a fever.
Second, the horses in question from barn K1 both tested positive for the
neuropathic form of EHV1, but the horses were not neurologic. Those
horses had low-grade fevers but are both responding to treatment.
Again, to be cautious those horses will also be monitored in the area within K2.
There was question concerning the pony people. The paddock is equipped
with opticide wipes that the pony people have and will continue to be
instructed to use every race. If a trainer has a concern about a lead pony,
they can do one of two things, they can either send their own pony from
their barn or opt to not have a lead pony for the race.
****IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THOSE LOOKING TO SHIP INTO HAWTHORNE****
Following this morning’s meeting, Dr. Folker spoke with Dr. Ernst at the
Illinois Department of Agriculture. While the restrictions on exiting the
grounds are still in place, Dr. Ernst stated that horses would be allowed
to enter the Hawthorne grounds under the following restrictions:
1. Horses entering the grounds are required to stay at Hawthorne
until the exit restrictions have been lifted.
2. Horses are required to present to Security upon entry a signed,
valid health certificate, listing the current temperature for the horse.
3. Horses shipping in cannot have had a fever within 14 days
of shipping in.
4. Horses must have an EHV vaccination within 120 days but
no sooner than 7 days.
Security will be asking for this information on the health certificate and
will be collecting those health certificates to be copied in the Racing Office.
Once copied, the health certificate will be returned to the trainer.
