Thursday 10/25/12 Barn A Isolation Update
As time continues for the isolation of Barn A, we now enter the next
steps of the process in regards to the treatment of horses that have
been stabled within that Barn.
All of the horses have been tested within Barn A and we will have all
of the test results back by the end of today. At that point, the next step,
as recommended by all experts who handle a Herpes positive, is to
create a separate isolation area for those horses that have tested negative
for the virus and do not have a fever.
This separate location will be in Barn 8 at Hawthorne. This location will
allow for those horses which have tested negative to be able to begin the
process for being returned to this horse population. This process is not quick.
As always, there are questions regarding any handling of any virus and
rumors run rampant. We ask that horsemen are educated and understand
the process. The following are items that are in regards to this process:
1. Barn 8 has been selected for two reasons. First, the barn is
currently clear of horses and will only house those horses which
test negative for all forms of equine herpes and have no fever.
Second, barn 8 is close to the state veterinarian’s office so those
horses may be monitored easily.
2. Barn 8 will still remain under the same quarantine rules as Barn A.
There will be round the clock security, proper hygiene measures
and limited access to the barn. This will remain in place until
which time horses are allowed to be reintroduced to the horse
population.
3. MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!! This is a virus that is passed via contact.
This is not considered an airborne virus. While the horses in Barn 8
will have tested negative for equine herpes, the virus can still only
be passed via contact. We are well aware of barns on other side of
this barn, but herpes CANNOT be passed from the distance of barn 8
to either barn 7 or 9.
The way the isolation is being handled is proper and normal protocol. We have
spoken with experts in regards to handling of equine herpes and this is suggested.
Finally, we all know rumors run rampant. Before starting a rumor, or if you hear of
a rumor, please get the correct information first. If you have any questions, please
contact Dr. Folker in the Detention Barn and she can answer those questions for you.
Dr. Folker is the point person and will happily answer any questions or concerns.
