SLOTS AT TRACKS CLOSE TO REALITY
After nearly one year of negotiation, promotion and lobbying to get slot machines at our racetracks, the Illinois Senate voted in favor of an expanded gaming bill that, while adding five more casinos in the state, includes essentially the entire contents of the slots at tracks bill that was negotiated by the ITHA and the racing industry.
The gaming bill is Senate Bill 737 (SB737) and now that it has passed the Senate, must be passed by the Illinois House which meets again the week of January 3, 2011. The bill requires passage by both the Senate and House, and signature by the Governor to become law. If that occurs, the law will go into effect in six months.
Getting Senate approval was a major hurdle to getting slots at the tracks accomplished but the battle is not over. The ITHA asks all of its members to stay engaged in this process. Contacting your State Representatives and asking them to support SB737 will be important in the next few weeks. We will keep you posted of developments as this process continues.
